This DIY is for making your already homemade laundry soap powder into a pod/cube so it is more convenient. If you are one who has contemplated making your own money saving, fantastic cleaning Laundry Soap Powder then hit this link for all of the mixtures I use here at Hibiscus House. It is easy and the $ Savings are fantastic!
I hesitated making this post that has sat in my drafts for awhile, but decided to go ahead and post. WARNING: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT EDIBLE! Who in the world thought that such a warning would have to be put on a cleaning product?
I first thought to myself why in the world would I want to waste more time doing this? What would be the point? I already use the powder on a daily basis. How could this help me? Well, I'm eating my words (not the pods)! Today I am finding it very convenient to reach in get a pod and throw in the laundry!
I used molds I could easily get my hands on to make these cubes, an egg carton and an old ice tray. These came in handy because my silicone molds were, heck, (I didn't know where I'd put them). They worked very well!
TAKE ANY OF YOUR HOMEMADE DETERGENTS AND ADD VINEGAR PLACE IN MOLD DRY AND USE. I STRESS HOMEMADE BECAUSE I REALLY DON'T KNOW HOW THE STORE BOUGHT DETERGENTS WOULD WORK WITH IT AND NOT TELLING ANYONE TO MAKE FROM THOSE.
THIS IS THE MEASUREMENTS YOU WILL BE USING. YOU DECIDE HOW MUCH YOU WILL NEED AND MIX ACCORDINGLY:
1/2 CUP POWDERED LAUNDRY SOAP
2 TABLESPOONS WHITE VINEGAR
FIND AN AIRTIGHT CONTAINER TO STORE THEM IN.
That's it! How easy can it be?
Check out Grandma Cora's old ice tray!
Top left to right:
1. Powder in bowl 2. Vinegar added. 3. Testing to see if it will mold.
4. Spooning into molds.
STEPS
- MEDIUM MIXING BOWL
- ADD DRY HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP POWDER. You can find many that I use here
- ADD VINEGAR this will bubble/react but that is expected if you've added baking soda to your powder mixture.
- STIR/MIX WELL
- TAKE A PORTION IN YOUR HAND TO SEE IF IT STICKS TOGETHER NICELY
- USE A TEASPOON TO PUT INTO YOUR MOLD, MASHING WITH BACK OF SPOON TO GET ENOUGH NEEDED INTO THE MOLD.
Finished and Dry!
Left: Ice tray worked great, plus it helped when I pulled the little handle, while taking them out! 2. The egg carton pod is very cute and excellent for regular loads of laundry. 3. The ice tray cubes will work wonderfully on extra dirty, large loads of laundry!
RESULTS
I MADE 5 EGG PODS FROM 1 BATCH
5 ICE TRY PODS FROM APX. 1 1/2 BATCHES
4 BATCHES OF MIXTURE MADE A TOTAL OF:
- 12 EGG PODS & 5 SOMEWHAT LARGER ICE TRAY PODS.
IN CONCLUSION:
2 CUPS DRY LAUNDRY POWDER MADE 17 LAUNDRY PODS
I STARTED DRYING THEM ON TOP OF DRYER AND WITHIN 2 DAYS THEY WERE COMPLETELY DRY AND READY TO USE. (as a matter of fact I'm using some now and laundry is getting clean and bright!)
YOU MUST START OFF WITH A GOOD LAUNDRY POWDER THAT YOU, YOURSELF MAKE. IF IT WORKS DRY, THE PODS WILL WORK AS WELL.
THE ONLY THING THAT WILL BE AFFECTED WHEN USING THESE PODS, IS YOUR LAUNDRY WILL BE SOFTER. THIS HAPPENS WHEN ADDING VINEGAR TO THE LAUNDRY ANYWAY.
IT'S A WIN-WIN SITUATION!
Find a cute container that has an easily accessible lid
The one above works great for me!
Laundry Pod anyone?

ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. I used to make my own soap, too, and need to get back to it. I loved how it cleaned ny clothes and was 1/3 or less of what regular detergent cost. Hope you have a great weekend, Dolly. xo Diana
