Daylight Savings Time In The Country!

Granddaddy

A more honest, down to earth man you would never find!  He was those things and more such a sweet person. He was a salt of the earth farmer.   In my lifetime I have only known one other man that was as neat a farmer as he was. The other man ended up being in my family too, after marriage. His name was Mr. Farmer and he was a principal at a small country community school called Ebenezer, he also was a pastor and wore his Suits to clean his ditch banks...so neat.

Granddaddy  was so neat you could eat out of his ditch, literally it was that clean.

My Grandmama, who married him, because as she said. "Well I kinda liked him, and he was the only person I knew at that time that had a motor car."  It was a Model A Ford.  I have the rim to this day from that Model A painted red in my yard.

I have her biscuit recipe on here she was the most loving, gentle person I have ever known in my lifetime. She was a woman of few words and they were all good.  She was always so laid back and calm, I said, " Grandma how can you stay so calm when such and such would happen?"
She would say ," Honey what good would it do if I ranted and raved?  " God, is in control and it will be alright.

Grandmama Cora

Everyone called granddaddy by his last name.  I don't know why but they did.

Some things that stand out in my mind were:

1)  We would go to the country stores and he would take us with him.  We watched while he drank his soda pop I think an RC Cola and give the store owners back that glass bottle...that cost money you know if you leave with it.  He would buy me butter cookies out of the one cent cookie jar, you know the kind with the hole in the middle of them.  I would put them on my fingers.  I would think well these men sitting around the pickle barrel at the pot bellied stove were going to talk all day long....whew...but now they are such fond memories.

Barn after a fire burned their house

2) He would visit every Sunday morning before church in his Sunday best clothes.

3) He worked hard, had chickens and a cow named Sookie. I loved to watch him shuck that corn pull it off with his fingers and feed the chickens.  I also loved to hear him milk in that tin bucket, I can hear the milk spraying into the bucket now.

4) I loved to run behind him barefoot when he plowed the fields. When he plowed a field you knew it would be fine, no clogs there.

The Old Smoke House and Chicken Yard

I could go on and on about these grandparents but it's getting late....especially late with the Daylight Savings Time...which brings me to the subject of this post.

Granddaddy would never, ever change his clock. I asked him why and he said, "Well, I see no need, been going by that time my whole life." I said to him, " Well you don't get confused with times to go somewhere? He said, "Honey think about it, just add an hour and there you go." "Besides they'll mess around and change it back soon anyway."

  1. My Granddaddy Hill called daylight savings time, the government's time. He and Grandma ran a store and if I ever went in and said, "What time is it?", he'd say, you want to know the government's time, or God's time. He was a wonderful man who saw no need in foolishness. And he thought everything to do with DST was foolish. I think he was right. ;)

  3. Please feel free to share more grandpa and grandma stories anytime. I really enjoyed hearing about them. I love your grandma's quote about trusting God. Can I copy that and share it on my Facebook? I'll make sure to credit it to you and your blog ;) :) :) I want to be that kind of person (like your grandparents) to the people in my life ;) :) Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

  7. Hi Dolly,
Sounds like we had similar grandparents. I remember my grandfather, who was a farmer, going to the local country store and sitting around the pot-bellied store for hours! Of course, that was only during the winter time. By the way, I wanted to tell you how much I liked your new header!

  10. I love your Granddaddy's attitude about time. When your work day is determined by the sun, the clock doesn't seem all that important. Thank you for sharing!

  11. Hey Dolly, I just had to come to your blog and read every word of it after I saw your thumbnail picture and title. I'm getting all "verklempt" thinking about the words you wrote about the fine people in your life. I just can't stand daylight savings time...I agree with Grandpa Goodson. I saw your post over at the "Cowgirl Up" blog party.

  13. I read somewhere that there's a Native American saying about how only the white man would think they could make a blanket longer by cutting an inch off the bottom and sewing it on to the top. Same kind of sentiments, I think. This is a lovely post! :)

  15. So cute! I loved this story about your grand daddy and grandma. They sound like such wonderful people. All of my grandparents had passed before I was born. I imagine that they would have been a lot like these fine folks. I did have Aunts and Uncles that seemed like grandparents to me. I so loved his comment about daylight savings!
    Hugs,

    1. Hi Jann,
Thanks for stopping by and for such sweet comments! Oh my they were such wonderful people. I hate you lost yours because it is a special bond formed with grandparents. They are like the most fun side of your parents...Oh but you were blessed to have your Aunts and Uncles...they are an extension of your parents and so much fun. Before I had my girls my nieces and nephews were like my very own. So glad to hear from you.

  18. " Honey what good would it do if I ranted and raved? God, is in control and it will be alright." Wise woman and wise words, then and now; words to live by.
I HATE daylight savings time! What does it save? Nothing! By the time I get in the house, feed the dogs/cats and myself then shower, it's nigh on midnight and, all to soon, time to do it all over again.
I HATE daylight savings time; it's government time, that's for sure.

  19. We have a Model A Dolly. Jerry would have loved to see your Grandpa's. I really enjoy seeing your family photos. I remember reading another post long ago about your Grandma Cora that reminded of my Grandma Pearl. I sure miss her. I like your Grandpa Goodson's idea about daylight savings too. It always makes me grumpy and LATE for atleast a few days.

    1. Oh gosh would love to see a picture of your Model A. I would loved to have seen granddaddy's too but it was long gone before I was born. All grandmama had left was that wheel. I saw it the other day and the tire has dry rotted...sad. I have had it at both of my homes.. Granddaddy was going to throw it away and I said NO I want it...Thank yo Heidi I know you miss your Grandma Pearl so much like I miss all of mine. It is lunch time here now and I'm cooking bacon...can't get used to the time...Love you girl!

    1. Awww you are so sweet. I no longer have mine either. I do have their memories. Enjoy mine like they are yours if you want too.. Having a granddaddy was like a wonderful loving extension of your daddy but the difference is they spoil you rotten and leave you with such great memories.
