Touring Texas: BBQ Texas Style

Chuck and I had just gotten into Abilene and he was especially hungry.  He had talked of nothing except that he wanted some Texas BBQ.  He does love his South Carolina BBQ and the sauces, but just had to try some different BBQs. Join me today for a visit to two of them....

We looked at the list of restaurants in the local area and decided to go to Betty Rose's. We met these two wonderful people who were nothing but welcoming.

These two were explaining to we South Carolina folks all about their BBQ and how they made it. They even agreed to show me out back where they make it.

We tried the brisket and the pulled pork with sauces.  We also had mashed potato salad for the first time.  It was funny because we were so tired and looking on the bar for the potato salad.  It was right in front of us just mashed.  The sauce is different in Texas than South Carolina, it was a sweet peppery sauce.  We are so used to mustard based around here until it took a little getting used to theirs but it was good!
We did enjoy ourselves there even though we were something tired from the trip.

Unbeknownst to me Chuck had told The Wheeler's that he had to have him some Texas BBQ so they obliged and we had it a few times at their home. It was delicious too of course. They also wanted to take us to another BBQ place that they enjoyed so off we went.  They know the owners so it was a fun night for all of us.  Jimmie Ray and Susie went too!

Sliced Brisket credit

Texas has made me a lover of smoked brisket!  As a matter of fact my butcher here at home had a beautiful brisket and it had to go home with me.  The weather was awful here in SC so I slow cooked it in the oven with artificial smoke...it was good but I like it better smoked outside!

Chopped Brisket Sandwich credit

I don't know why I would be surprised at the amount of beef they ate, after all I was in Texas!  Duh, blonde/grey moment for me.  It was delicious!  I wish we had some here in South Carolina that would taste like theirs!

Sausage Plate credit

The sausage was good too. They have regular and Jalapeno sausage. Delicious! They also have pulled pork and pork ribs with delicious sides!

What we learned about the Texas BBQ was that it was Delicious!  Smokey!  Sweet and Peppery! They like beef more than pork and I now have an appreciation for brisket.  The talk of Texas as I saw it was Brisket!

Hope you enjoyed this as much as I!  Wish we could pull it off the page and eat it!

How cool that you got to go in back and see stuff being cooked. I'd love to do that.

I like a sweet sauce on my BBQ. I also like a sweet slaw. And I make mashed potato salad all the time.

  4. There sure are a lot of ways to BBQ! I had rub in Tennessee, there is vinegar based in Arkansas, we have a St Louis favorite Maull's BBQ sauce which is sweet and spicy, I've had mustard based that we put on pork and it goes on and on. I just love it when it falls apart and it is more like pulled meat. Sounds like you all had a great time.
