Homemade Coconut Oil Toothpaste

Have you made this yet?  Do you make homemade products for your home, health or body needs?  I've found that although I put these things off they truly can save you money in the long run.  From time to time, I am skeptical of some of these homemade products and want to be sure they are safe to be used.  Every ingredient needs to be investigated for safety, well as best as any individual can investigate that is.  I jumped off the buy everything a while back and haven't been disappointed at all.  The deodorant I put together last year, and let me tell you one tube lasted an entire year, works wonderfully!  Today we're talking toothpaste!

I mentioned researching the ingredients and one of the first that caught my eye is Xylitol.  What is this and how safe is it?

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol.
Habitual use of xylitol-containing food and oral hygiene adjuvants has been shown to reduce the growth of dental plaque, to interfere with the growth of caries-associated bacteria, to decrease the incidence of dental caries, and to be associated with remineralization of caries lesions. Source
Another source Dr. Axe on the Xylitol Side Effects should you wish to read further.

Trace Minerals:  I bought my Concentrace Trace Mineral Drops at Amazon.
There are numerous articles on the use of these.
We need to drink more water.  I know I'm guilty of that. Segment 3 tells how acidic one bottle of pop like Coke is.  It would take 32 cups of water to neutralize the one 20 oz bottle of pop. The soft drinks are so acidic.  While watching this video guess what was opened and sitting on the desk at the time? A Coke.  Yes, guilty of drinking too many.  This may help me curb that little habit of mine.
**Note:  There are more videos but you can watch from the channel on youtube if you wish.
Another YouTube video Ionic Trace Minerals Dr. Darrin Starkey, about this particular product that I'm using.  You may want to fast forward to 11:45 to hear the interview.

Coconut Oil: I used Tresomega Nutrition Refined Organic Coconut Oil.
Essential Oils, :  Numerous Essential Oils are sold online. One article by Dr Axe Essential Oils Guide.

Baking Soda:  I used Bob's Red Mill Baking Soda

Container: GoToob I found on Amazon. I like these very much so does this young lady in video review here.  She also tells of great travel packing with these and more items.
**My personal note:  It can be a little tricky to put your homemade toothpaste into this but it can be done as you see in my pictures.  Take a small spoon, dip up just enough to put into the opening, squeeze and thump bottle bottom on the counter it will suck most of the toothpaste on down.  It was kind of fun actually my grandson had fun squeezing it too!

I am on my Coconut Oil Kick at the moment hence the name I just gave it Homemade Coconut Oil Toothpaste.

When you mix it up well it will look like this

This is a look at the tube
I really like it!

This was taken yesterday right after mixing and placing it in the bottle.
Showing how it comes out of the bottle
The mixture was soft and I made a mess on my toothbrush, but it brushed well anyway.

Today the toothpaste was thicker
I like the texture but had to shake the bottle a little for easier squeezing.

Dr. Axe Homemade Baking Soda Toothpaste mixture

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon xylitol powder
  • 30 drops trace minerals
  • 20 drops cinnamon or clove essential oil
  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil
  • toothpaste tube

Directions

     1. Put all ingredients into a bowl and mix well together.  (You can also use a food processor for this)
     2. Remove homemade toothpaste and store in a glass jar with a lid.  If it starts to dry out add a bit of water.
**Personal note:  I don't know why he changed to a glass jar but I put mine into the tube.  You can make your own choice.

This is by no means a review of the mixture.
I'll update later as to how Dr. Axe's Toothpaste works!
At this moment I like the way it makes my teeth feel.
** note: I will also update the way it performs in this GoToob container.
If it doesn't do well in it that may be the reason for the change to the glass jar in Dr. Axe's mixture.
