Beginner Recipe: Easy Microwave Steamed or Oven Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Do you like Brussels Sprouts?  I do but don't have them very often. Chuck really likes them. It can't get any easier than this recipe for steamed.  These are great roasted as well! When pushed for time you can't beat these cooked in the microwave. This is a great recipe for the beginner cook.

You want to know something funny I always called them Brussel Sprouts come to find out it is really Brussels Sprouts.  Who knew?  Did you?

This microwave steamer is made by Pampered Chef and I'll tell you I'd be lost without it and my rice cooker.

  • Brussels Sprouts amount of your choice (I used a pound)
  • Water to barely cover the steamer. (1/4 cup or less)
  • Your choice: Olive oil-1 Tablespoon, butter 1 Tablespoon, or bacon drippings 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Wash Brussels Sprouts
  2. Slice into down he middle of each
  3. Place just enough water to cover the bottom of your microwave steamer or microwave-ready cooking container.
  4. Add oil, butter or bacon drippings
  5. Add seasonings
  6. Cover with lid
  7. Cook 4 to 8 minutes or until tender
Serves 2 - 4 people

1)You don't have to cut them in half, I just find they cook quicker and have heard they tend to burst in the microwave. However, I've never had any to burst.
2) You don't have to add oils or butter you can just steam and eat. The choice is up to you.
3) Season with anything you like in them.

How easy is that?  Very!

Time your meal and within 8 minutes of everything else being ready throw these babies into the microwave for a quick healthy side vegetable.

You can also roast these:

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Omit water in ingredients above and use the following

1 pound Brussels Sprouts
1 - 2 Tablespoons oil of your choice
Salt and pepper
Plastic bag or bowl
Baking sheet
Optional: parchment paper or aluminum foil to line the pan

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Wash Brussels Sprouts, you can leave them whole for this recipe
Place oil into plastic bag or bowl
Add Brussels Sprouts to coat well
Place one layer onto a lightly greased or lined baking sheet
Season with salt and cracked black pepper
Roast checking in 20 minutes turning with a spatula to prevent sticking and promote browning on all sides
Cook until tender 30 - 45 minutes

Serve while warm

Pretty much any vegetable can be steamed and roasted in these ways.

There you have it two different ways to cook one simple vegetable
I wouldn't boil these because it takes away some of the vitamins

Happy cooking and beginners feel free to ask any questions at any time!

Until next time
