Make Your Own: Dry Onion Soup Mix

I can't remember how many years I've used Lipton Dry Onion Soup Mix. If you have the ingredients on hand why not make it yourself?  Most of the recipes are basically the same.  This mix is a fine substitute.  I used it in a meatloaf and it was good.

I suggest you check your spices and keep them fresh it makes a difference in taste.  Most spices can be kept well past their use by dates but make sure the ones you have can be used for taste and safety.

Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix

1/4 cup dried onion flakes
2 Tablespoons beef bouillon granules
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1/8 teaspoon celery seed
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
*optional 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix all ingredients together. Store in an airtight container. I used a LocknLock container.
Use in recipes that call for one envelope of dry onion soup mix.

  • 1/3 cup level = 1 envelope dry onion soup mix

  • Soup:  Add 4 cups water, bring to a boil stirring occasionally, lower heat, and simmer for 10 minutes.

  • French Onion Dip:  mix the recipe above with one pint of sour cream.

I made several recipes of the mix

Adjust to taste in recipes

The mix works well as a substitute
If you have the ingredients in your pantry as I do it is a time saver
Plus a little money-saver

I didn't add sugar, salt, garlic powder, or cornstarch to today's mix
If needed can always add to what you're cooking

Years ago I did make it with sugar, salt, and cornstarch
